The competitive section of the club is divided into four sections:
Primary squad:
The Primary Squad provides
a fun, safe and unpressured training environment in which swimmers will gain
valuable experience to help develop their training skills and techniques. Minimum age requirement 8 years,
Primary Squad sessions are not swimming
lessons and are not organised and run as such. It is a specially planned
training program based on the Long Term Athlete Development pathway Stage 2 – Swim Skills - building technique and
learning competitive skills. It is designed to develop training and basic
competition skills for competitive swimming. Swimmers do not progress in the
same way as swimming lessons and generally stay in the squad for 1 or 2 years
until they have reached the appropriate age and grasped the skills of how to train
properly. See full criteria here
Junior squad:
As swimmers become more able in their strokes they enter the junior squad where more emphasis on technique is placed and more participation is required in galas and open meets. There are, at present five sessions available in the week plus the top juniors can swim in the morning sessions. Sunday morning swimming is also available by invitation. (Coach: Rob Howe)
Senior squad:
This is the main competitive squad which is led by Barry Thomas where continuous emphasis is given to stroke work, and all aspects of racing. Members of this squad also compete in County, London Region and National competitions including the National Arena League. There are, at present, nine available sessions in the week. (Coaches: Barry Thomas and Paul Stephenson)
Masters squad:
This squad is for more senior age group swimmers who want to swim in masters competitions or just to maintain fitness. (Ciaches Rob Howe & Alf Cook)
HEAD COACH: BARRY THOMAS
SENIOR COACH: PAUL STEPHENSON
JUNIOR COACH: ROB HOWE
Ageing but keen sportsman. Still prepared to turn out for the odd gala and show the youngsters how it should be done. Almost started training again when London won the 2012 Olympics and believes all young swimmers should use the Olympics as their inspiration to train hard.
